Breaking Free From the Productivity Trap: Finding Joy in Doing Less

May 27, 20254 min read

I used to measure my worth by how much I could get done in a day.
To-do list fully crossed off? I was a queen.
Half-finished list and dishes in the sink? I was a failure.

But somewhere between burnout, hormone hell, and building a business through midlife chaos, I realized something:
Being productive wasn’t making me happy. It was making me miserable.

When “doing more” becomes a problem

We’re told that productivity is the path to success.
And sure, we
do need to get things done.
But when every hour of your day is filled, when rest feels like laziness, and when you feel guilty for even
thinking about slowing down:
That’s not productivity.
That’s punishment.

Let me guess:
You’ve read the books. Tried the planners. Time-blocked. Stacked habits. Drank the morning lemon water.
And still felt like you were barely staying afloat.

That’s not because you’re doing it wrong.
It’s because the system wasn’t built for someone navigating a business, a body in hormonal revolt, and a brain that’s suddenly allergic to hustle.

The productivity trap is real and it’s brutal

Especially for women.
Especially for entrepreneurs.
Especially in midlife.

Because not only are we juggling our businesses, clients, family, and life admin…
We’re also trying to hold ourselves together while our hormones are throwing a house party and didn’t even bother to invite estrogen.

We’re expected to show up the same way every day, no matter how our body feels, how much sleep we got, or whether we woke up with anxiety or a full-blown emotional hangover.

But here’s the truth: you are not a machine.
You’re a human being. A cyclical, complex, beautifully unpredictable human being.
And you were never meant to run like a robot on a timer.

More rest ≠ less ambition

This one took me a while to believe.
I thought if I slowed down, everything would fall apart.
That I’d get lazy.
That I’d miss my shot.

But what actually happened when I stopped glorifying busy?

  • I stopped doing the things that didn’t move the needle.

  • I got clearer on what actually mattered.

  • I had energy again.

  • I found joy again.

  • My business grew because I wasn’t drowning in pointless tasks.

Turns out, rest fuels results.

And no, I’m not talking about bubble baths and face masks (though yes, love those too).
I’m talking about actual boundaries. White space. Saying no. Logging off.
Honouring your own bandwidth instead of pushing through it.

Signs you’re stuck in the productivity trap

  • You feel guilty when you’re not working

  • You never feel “done” no matter how much you accomplish

  • You use your to-do list as proof you’re allowed to rest

  • You avoid rest because it feels uncomfortable or unearned

  • You can’t remember the last time you did nothing (and I mean nothing) without feeling anxious

Sound familiar? That’s not you being a failure. That’s you being conditioned to believe your value is tied to your output.

It’s not.

What if doing less is the smartest strategy?

Imagine waking up and not immediately scanning your mental to-do list.
Imagine moving through your day with focus, ease, and time to breathe.
Imagine choosing your top 3 priorities and letting the rest wait.

You’d probably be less frazzled.
Less reactive.
More in tune with your body.
More aligned with your actual goals instead of chasing shiny distractions.

And spoiler alert? You’d still be successful. Maybe even more so.

Because busy isn’t a badge of honour.
It’s a warning sign.

Give yourself permission to slow the hell down

Here’s your official permission slip to stop trying to do it all.

  • Your worth is not in your output.

  • Your value is not up for debate.

  • You are allowed to rest without earning it.

The world won’t end if you do less today.
Your business won’t crumble if you take a break.
And your future self will thank you for choosing peace over pressure.

Midlife is asking you to recalibrate.
Not push harder.
Not prove more.
But trust yourself enough to
do less and still win.

You’re not falling behind. You’re finding your pace.

If you need help figuring out what’s actually worth your time (and what you can toss in the nope pile), I’ve got you.
Let’s look at your life, your business, your capacity and build a plan that works
with your body, not against it.

You don’t need more productivity hacks.
You need a nervous system that’s not in constant survival mode.

Let’s rebuild from there.
