You Can’t Affirm Your Way Out of Adrenal Fatigue

April 22, 20255 min read

I love a good affirmation.
I’ve got them written in every book.
I’ve journaled intentions.
I’ve repeated mantras.
I’ve whispered, “I am strong. I am capable. I am enough,” in the early hours of the morning, hoping it would carry me through another jam-packed day.

But here’s the truth:

None of those affirmations helped when I couldn’t get out of bed.
None of them touched the deep, bone-crushing exhaustion that made brushing my teeth feel like a full-body workout.
None of them cleared the brain fog, the anxiety, the weight gain, or the soul-level burnout that had taken over.

That’s when I realized something I wish I’d learned years earlier.

You can’t affirm your way out of adrenal fatigue.

Mindset matters. But so does biology.

We’ve been fed a steady diet of toxic positivity wrapped in self-help language.
Just think better thoughts. Just raise your vibration. Just choose joy.
Just reframe your mindset.

And while mindset is powerful, it’s not medicine.

If your hormones are flatlining and your nervous system is fried, no amount of positive thinking is going to reset your body.
You don’t need another affirmation.
You need rest.
You need care.
You need a whole new approach to how you show up for your business and your life.

Let me paint the picture

At the height of my burnout, I had all the routines.

Gratitude journaling.
Cold(ish) showers.
Meal prep.
Affirmations.
Visualization.
All of it.

But I was still anxious. I couldn’t sleep. My heart raced all day. I gained weight rapidly despite eating better than ever. I couldn’t remember full sentences. I’d burst into tears for no reason. I would lie in bed during the day, not because I was sad, but because I literally couldn’t function.

Still, I told myself:
“Just push through.”
“You’re fine.”
“This is just a rough patch.”
“Other women have it harder.”

It wasn’t a rough patch. It was a health crisis.

And no one told me.
Not my doctors. Not my friends. Not the productivity gurus or mindset mentors.
No one told me that I was likely dealing with hormone depletion, adrenal dysregulation, and nervous system overload.

Mindset can’t override a malfunctioning system.

When your brain chemistry is shifting and your body is in constant fight-or-flight, your mindset work turns into self-gaslighting. You start blaming yourself for not being “grateful enough” or “motivated enough.”

You start wondering what’s wrong with you.

Here’s the truth:

Nothing is wrong with you.

You are not broken. You are not failing. You are not lazy, dramatic, or weak.

You are in mid-life, possibly (peri)menopause.
You are in a season of transition that no one prepares you for.
And your body is trying to get your attention.

The cost of ignoring the signals

The problem is, most high-achieving women don’t slow down until they’re forced to.

We push.
We override.
We perform.
We show up smiling while falling apart inside.

Because that’s what we were taught. That rest is earned. That ease is indulgent. That hard work is a virtue.

And it works. For a while.

Until your body taps out.

Until your hormones shift.
Until menopause sneaks in and steals your sleep, your clarity, your drive.
Until you stop recognizing yourself in the mirror, or worse, in your own mind.

This isn’t just a phase. It’s a reckoning.

What actually helps

This is the part no one talks about in business circles.
Especially not with high-powered women who are still trying to run teams, raise kids, launch products, and scale while surviving mid-life.

Here’s what helped me:

  • Getting honest about what I could no longer fake my way through

  • Choosing rest over productivity—even when it felt like failure

  • Asking for help

  • Letting my team step up

  • Cutting what wasn’t essential

  • Building a business that actually fits the woman I am now—not who I used to be

  • Finding support from people who understand this transition

And yes, sometimes repeating affirmations. But only once I’d taken care of the root cause.

Because “I am enough” lands differently when you’re fed, rested, supported, and seen.

You are still the CEO…even when you’re on the couch

One of the hardest mindset shifts for me was realizing that being in recovery, being slower, being softer… didn’t make me less of a leader.

It made me a better one.

I started making decisions from clarity instead of panic.
I stopped people-pleasing just to keep clients.
I restructured offers to protect my energy.
I delegated with boundaries.
I began to trust that my value wasn’t in how much I could push through, but how much I could stay grounded and aligned.

Let me be clear

You do not need to burn your business down.
You do not need to power through another quarter like this.
You do not need to shame yourself for being human.

You need a plan. You need support. And you need to know that what you’re feeling is real.

It’s not all in your head. It’s in your body.

And your body deserves better than another sticky note on the mirror.

Let this be your affirmation today

I’m allowed to slow down.
I’m allowed to rest.
I’m allowed to rebuild.
I’m allowed to receive.
I’m allowed to be supported.
I’m allowed to be in process and still be powerful.

If you’re building a business while navigating burnout or menopause, I want to support you.

Let’s look at your business model, your energy, and your numbers and restructure things so you’re not just surviving but truly healing and thriving.
